Homebrew Wine

When we think about homebrew wine we have two fundamental thoughts that go through our mind. The first is are we wanting to make this from a kit or are we looking at homebrew wine that is made from all the natural products that we can pick from the trees, hedges and fields in the country.

Let’s firstly look at homebrew wine from a kit. There are many different types of wine making kits available but again a decision needs to be made as to whether it’s a 6 bottle wine kit or a 30 bottle wine kit we want to make. The six bottle kit is very much designed for people who struggle to lift and have limited space. The 30 bottle packs are much better because you get so much more and let’s be right 6 bottles does not go very far!!! The 30 bottle kits have a far bigger choice in not only the grape and styles on offer but also in the different ranges available. For example we have a choice of kits where you add the sugar, kits where you have 5 litres of grape juice, 7.5 litres of grape juice, 10 litres of grape juice, 15 litres of grape juice and you top these up with water to make the 23 litres (30 bottles). We have also seen on a limited edition programme some 23 litre homebrew wine kits where you don’t add any water at all only the yeast. These are mad up of fresh pasteurised grape juice. The juice has not been concentrated and the end product is truly superb. All these products which are changing the face of people’s perception of home brew are coming from Canada where the market for homebrew wine is massive. In fact it’s the biggest market in the world. Perhaps that’s why there has been so much development work in the way home brew wines are being manufactured.

If we are to make a homebrew wine from the natural products available then this requires quite a lot more work. We need to decide the style of wine we are making and then we need to make sure we have sufficient of that fruit (or whatever it is we are making) available. Again depending on the quantity we can make 6 or 30 bottles.

Yeast, nutrient, pectolase, campdens, stabiliser, and finings are all needed. We have some great recipes on the site for homebrew wine made from natural products so have a look and give it a go.
