Cork Screw

What would we do with that bottle of wine if we could not get the cork out - who was the genius who invented the cork screw? Many famous historians have failed to find this out.

I know that we are starting to see a lot more bottles from the Southern Hemisphere which are having a screw top eliminating the need for a cork screw but somehow wine just does not seem to be the same without popping that cork.

We have also seen a terrific change in the style of cork screw that is available on the market today. In the early days it was a simple tripod type. This was followed by the twin lever style which was quite a breakthrough at the time. Now we have them in all shapes and sizes. You can get a fish cork screw which has the thread for the cork in the fish's mouth and the body of the fish expands as you pull the cork out. Quite incredible!! We have ones with a sharp end that goes through the cork and will pump gas into the gap between the cork and the wine. This then forces the cork out under pressure.

We have cork screws with built-in foil cutters. What's that you may ask? It means that you can cut the foil (or some people call them shrink tops) that goes onto the bottle after the cork has been put in. It's a pain when you want to take out the cork as you never seem to have the right thing to cut the foil. Well this allows you to do this. It's normally made of two sharp little rollers which when squeezed will cut the foil as this is turned round the bottle. Some cork screws will have this as a built in facility. Alternatively you can buy these separately.

The cork screw that comes on a stand has been the latest development. This is free standing and will sit on a surface. When you want to open the bottle you simply place it under the nozzle and pull it down onto the cork. A further push will make it go into the cork. When this is done simply pull it back and the cork has been removed from the bottle of wine.

What ever type of cork screw you are looking for we will have it - even if it's Champagne you need help opening.
